Exploring Miami, the vacation destination we call home, often comes with a high price. But here are some inexpensive ways to experience the arts in South Florida.
Museums
The Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) showcases modern and contemporary international art of the 20 and 21st centuries. Exhibits highlight the city’s diverse community and admission is free on the first Thursday and second Saturday of every month.
From free jazz events and a free teen program to diverse exhibits, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) provides a unique experience close to home. The art museum offers free admission for North Miami residents and three dollar student tickets. The teen program starts every year with different classes for every day of the week. Classes include fashion design, photography, dance, painting, drawing and writing.
Theatre
The Broward Center for the Performing Arts offers discount tickets for students under 25-years-old. The same price is also available for teachers. Two hours before performances the theatre also sells further discounted, $20 student rush tickets. Two tickets can be purchased with a student ID.
Sites
Wynwood Arts District, known for its colorful, eye-catching murals, houses over 70 galleries, retail stores and antique shops. Exploring the arts district with its street art can be a free and unique experience.
The Downtown Hollywood Artwalk features galleries and businesses showcasing art, murals, painting artists and jazz music. The free event is held the third Saturday of every month from 5:00 to 10:00 pm.
Flagler Arts and Technology Village (FATVillage) is an arts district that holds an event called ArtWalk the last Saturday of every month. The event, held in celebration of art and artists, includes food trucks and performances. Visitors can explore the art district and its galleries, studios and creative businesses.
Music
The New World Symphony presents a series of free concerts outdoors, projected on a 7,000-square-foot projection wall of the New World Center. The WALLCAST concerts utilize visual and audio technology to bring the symphony to the public for a fun, free event. Bring a blanket and friends or family to listen in. Movies are also projected for the public to enjoy.
North Beach Bandshell hosts a variety of different free classes and concerts in the heart of North Beach. Upcoming events include concerts and a food truck and music night with a performance by the Rambling String Band.
Culture Shock Miami
Culture Shock Miami, offered by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, allows students between the ages of 13 and 22 to receive $5 tickets to music, art, dance and theater events in Miami-Dade. Tickets can be bought on their website www.CultureShockMiami.com in advance. When a $5 ticket is purchased, a second ticket can be purchased at the same price for someone of any age. These tickets sell out way in advance.
