A Look into the the Medow’s Relief Project
Our names are Hannah and Harrison Medow, and we are starting a GoFundMe page to aid both the frontline Jewish and Muslim healthcare workers of Miami-Dade County, as well as kosher and halal-observant restaurants, delicatessens, and caterers in our community. Our goal is to raise $100,000.
This project is meant to help support healthcare workers during this exceptionally demanding time by providing food to healthcare facilities, so that they can provide the utmost care to their patients. Muslim halal-observant and Jewish kashrut-observant workers will be able to eat food satisfying the dietary requirements of their respective religions without having to leave their place of employment. According to a 2014 population study by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation there were an estimated 123,200 Jewish persons living in the Greater Miami area and as early as 2012 there were approximately 100,000 Muslims in South Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach) counties. It stands to reason that many of these communities are on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19. As two Jewish teenagers in South Florida, we hoped to support them and foster increased solidarity between Jewish and Muslim communities. We hope that this project will help make both Passover and Ramadan sweeter during this difficult time. Of course, we’ll be delighted if non-Jewish/non-Muslim healthcare workers can enjoy a delicious kosher or halal-ready meal, too!
Members of the Miami-Dade food industry who provide kosher and halal-ready food options and the Jewish and Muslim healthcare workers who could use some pre-made meals while they battle COVID-19 on the front lines.
Providing funds to kosher and halal-observant restaurants, caterers, etc. so that they can provide meals to healthcare workers in Miami-Dade hospitals, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes who observe Kashrut and Halal.
The food is going to hospitals, ALFs, and nursing homes throughout Miami-Dade County.
The fundraiser is taking place currently-starting on April 1.
So that we can support Jewish and Muslim employees as they continue working on the front lines to care for patients who are suffering from the coronavirus (COVID-19). We were moved by the example of many in the food industry who are trying to support healthcare workers with prepared meals while they fight to save those in the community afflicted by COVID-19. At the same time, we are hoping to promote solidarity between Jewish and Muslim communities during an extended time of difficult geopolitical strife, particularly in the Middle East. Our goal is to raise money through GoFundMe to distribute to local kosher and halal-observant restaurants, who can in turn deliver prepared meals to healthcare workers, Jews, Muslims, and their brave coworkers!
