In the 2019-2020 school year, for a student to take an AP class, he or she must request the class and their parents must sign the Dr. Michael M. Krop SHS Advanced Placement Contract. On this contract, requirements and results of taking AP classes are written.

     Freshmen and sophomores already have received it, juniors will be receiving it around the end of the quarter.

     “I understand that if requesting multiple AP courses, I am making a commitment to undertake a very rigorous academic schedule,” the contract reads.

     AP classes are a year long commitment and much more difficult. This contract was implemented so that students understand the challenges that come with AP classes and won’t switch out of the class due to its difficulty.

     “We’ve had issues in the past in with kids being placed into AP courses, that shouldn’t be, and we brainstormed a way to monitor a way to stop that,” Clappier said.

     This means that next year, if a student tries to get out of an AP class because it’s too hard, they won’t be able to due to the contract being signed.

     “A number of schools are doing something similar, we tailored it to Krop,” assistant principal Pamela Clappier said.

     Another new requirement is that if a students wants to take over three APs, they need administrative and guidance counselor approval.

     This is meant to help students because while, three APs is already a lot, four or more is excessive and unnecessary. It’s more than what most students can handle according to Clappier, and isn’t needed to get into students’ desired colleges.
