The year 1948 was full of surprises. Israel declared independence, the United States began an 11 month airlift into Berlin, Germany and one could buy a loaf of bread with just 14 cents. But a natural phenomena took place that year, one that would not be seen for another 68 years — a supermoon.
This morning’s moon was the closest that it has been to the Earth since 1948. It will be seen 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than most normal moons.
A supermoon is the combination of two natural occurrences. First, the moon reaches a distance 90 percent closer to the earth than the rest of its orbit, and then aligns its orbit with the sun’s.
Make sure to catch the supermoon tonight at around seven p.m. If you miss it, you will have to wait until Nov. 25, 2034 to see it again.
