Members of Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society, attended the Florida Gulf Coast University Invitational Math Competition to put their skills to the test against students from different schools on Monday December 2. Any member of the honor society who wanted to compete had to take a test given by Mr. Holmes. Their scores determined whether they could compete in a team competition in addition to an individual competition. The individual competitions were composed of one hour to answer 30 questions and the team competitions included two teams of four students, each team from different schools, racing against the clock and the other team to answer math problems. Students were allowed to compete in the math course they were taking in the current year. Krop students competed in four out of six categories, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Calculus and Statistics. The competition ended up in success for some Krop students.
In the individual competitions, Mark Itkin won 5th place and Mayra Rodriguez won 3rd place for statistics. For the team competitions Mark Itkin, Zlata Itkin, Mayra Rodriguez and Hayley Piper won 3rd place in statistics and Monica Wang, Benjamin Manley, Kevin Ordet and Kevin Vera won 5th place in calculus.
Sophomore Sonia Gutt who attended the competition for the first time said “it was a fun experience overall. I would 100 percent recommend it and I would definitely do it again next year, but study before it.”
