In recent years, Krop has undergone many structural changes in leadership. Most recently, we welcome two new assistant principals, Monica Alba-Núñez and Kristan Belfield.
Overseeing curriculum, the School Improvement Plan, the Magnet program and the EESAC committee, Alba-Nuñez began her career at Krop during the second semester of the 2022-2023 school year, after working at Madie Ives K-8 Center for over 20 years.
“I needed a change, but I felt terrible about leaving my kids,” Alba-Nuñez said. “So, I thought that Krop was the best option because I could still be with my kids, they would just be taller.”
For Belfield, a career in education began when she transferred to FIU from Marshall University in West Virginia. After realizing she didn’t want to continue with her Chemistry major, she moved to Miami to pursue a degree in Math Education. She interned and worked at Barbara Goleman Senior High as a math teacher before becoming a testing chair and later assistant principal at Hialeah Gardens Senior High.
Bellfield, who oversees 10th grade, Math, Science, Social Studies and school testing, said that she wants to work on having a positive school year. As the school year progresses she plans to memorize classroom placements and work alongside Alba-Núñez to be there for students in need.
“At this level you have a better ability to be able to make sure everything is in place and that you can do everything within your means to give the students as many opportunities as possible,” Belfield said.
Though it’s her first year as our assistant principal, Belfield said that she is extremely excited and ready to work with our faculty and staff, but even more excited to help students in their daily routines. Alba-Nuñez shares the same inspiration, and said her children’s success is what motivates her, “all 2,200 of them.”
