As calmly as one might reach for his wallet, Esteban Santiago pulled out a handgun at the Ft. Lauderdale airport on Friday, firing fifteen bullets, and killing five people.
A planned attack on the Fort Lauderdale airport happened at the baggage claim of terminal two. TMZ Security footage gives a glimpse of seconds before the attack, in which families and couples are walking calmly, some tugging suitcases, others engaging in conversation when shots are suddenly fired. The gunman, wearing a blue sweater, pulled a 9 mm loaded pistol put of his waistband, killed 5 people and wounded eight.
When Santiago pulled out a gun, people at the airport dove behind trashcans and luggage, while others covered their head in attempt to hide. Roads around the airport were congested for hours after the attack and the airport was evacuated.
Four or the five victims who were killed have been identified, including Terry Andres, from Virginia Beache who was on a vacation with his wife for his 63rd birthday. Another victim, Olga Woltering was 84 years old, on her way to a couples cruise with her husband. Michael Oehme of Coucil Bluffs was identified by the Iowa governor as another victim to the shooting. 70 year old Shirley Timmons, a grandmother, and wife of 51 years was killed in this tragedy as well.
Santiago faces three federal offenses, that may result in his death through the death penalty.
