Krops athletic department demands a lot of hands-on assistance relying on the sports medicine club. The Sports Medicine Club provides students interested in sports medicine to pursue what could be their future career.
Athletic trainer and sponsor of the club, Juliana Edwards started this club to not only help the students, but to help athletes as well. Members of the club receive experience helping injured athletes and gain knowledge in the field they hope to study, all while working on their fellow peers.
The Sports Medicine Club attends all home sporting events to help assist on the medical side, providing support to Krops’ athletes. While on the sidelines of games, the club members mainly focus on taping up the players and managing cramps; making sure their athletes stay hydrated. However, at meetings, players focus on strength, stability, and injury prevention.
The senior club president, Savannah Blackman notes that without the sports medicine club, the school would likely need to hire additional athletic staff to assist at games; instead students get a chance to do what they enjoy.
“This club allows me to dive deep into my interests that I want to pursue as a career,” Blackman said. “Being on the field allows me to respond to certain injuries that not many students get a chance to be around.”
The Sports Medicine Club members spend lots of time with the athletes because athletes that get injured while playing, attend the meetings to be assisted with rehab by the members.
Senior Jonathan Diaz, who competes in wrestling, appreciates that most members of the club are athletes themselves, meaning they understand how hard sports can be on the body.
“I have a hairline fracture on my toe and a torn left shoulder,” Diaz said. “The sports medicine club iced my toe, wrapped it, stretched out my shoulder, and used electric stimulation to numb the pain. With their help, I was able to get back to wrestling with less pain than before the injury.”
Many people focus on the entertainment side of sports, undermining the importance of staying healthy for athletes. The members of the club help educate their athletes that in order to perform at a top level, it is necessary to keep your body healthy. The members teach injury prevention methods along with stability and balance to help athletes reach their top potential.
“We could improve by having more club events sponsored by the school, we’re just getting started so we don’t have a big name yet, but I see us becoming a part of more events in the future,” Blackman said.
