Homecoming brings the carnival to Krop
This year’s carnival-themed Homecoming included a dress-down spirit week, a football game, a free pep rally, and ended with the crowning of the first Krop female Homecoming King.
Spirit week consisted of carnival-themed dress down days, such as a “Prepare to be Hypnotized” pajama day and “Sideshow Spectacular” Thursday. Activities such as bean bag toss and musical “hats” took place during lunch time throughout the week. Popcorn and cotton candy were handed out to students during Krop’s very own “Karnival.”
The Sept. 23 pep rally was the first complimentary pep rally in years. In order to successfully include everyone, students went to two separate pep rallies based on the individual’s floor. Krop’s cheerleaders, Silver Dazzlers, and marching band performed as the football team came in. The students cheered and chanted, hyping the football team up, preparing them for their game against South Broward later that night.
As the clock struck 7:30 p.m. the Krop Lightning Football team stormed onto the field, in an attempt to win their Homecoming game. With the stands full, the lightning got off to a good start, as they kept the game within one score. They were within 7 points for most of the game; however, during the 4th quarter, the Bulldogs pulled away. They fought a tough battle against South Broward, resulting in defeat, with a score of 34-19.
The final event to cap off Homecoming week was the dance on Saturday night. Approximately 200 students were in attendance, dressed in their formal attire. The decorations included carnival-themed centerpieces and small attention to detail that tied together the entire event. For students’ enjoyment, there was a 360-degree photo booth to capture memories of the night. During the dance, the winners of the Homecoming court were announced, while the crowd waited. The candidates campaigned throughout the week in order to gain as many student votes as possible.
Seniors Sofia Villa and Saniyah Jean were announced as Homecoming King and Queen, respectively. Both winners were brought up on stage and given medals in front of their peers, for the hard work and effort they put into this award.
“I ran for Homecoming Queen for fun, not thinking much, but my efforts paid off when they called me up and announced my name as queen,” Jean said. “It was a great experience going up on stage and being rewarded with a medal.”
For the first time in Krop history, a female won the title of Homecoming King. Villa promoted herself by going around school and telling students what she was trying to achieve. She ran for King in hopes of breaking the norm that only guys can run for Homecoming King.
She shouts out the administration and Activities Director Michelle Russell for allowing her to do this, as she achieved her goal of becoming Homecoming King. As a senior she wanted to leave a statement before she left and the administration allowed her to represent herself.
“I ran for King to show every freshman and above that you can be whoever you want regardless of your gender or sexuality,” Villa said. “I wanted to break that boundary or tradition, as I felt more comfortable running for that position, which people thought was really cool.”
