On Thursday, Aug. 24, the Krop Lightning varsity football team won their first game of the season against Miami High 28 to 14 at Ives Estates Park.
Although they were down eight points by halftime, the team made a speedy comeback in the third and fourth quarters.
“We did a really good job of keeping our composure and had some definite senior leadership in the second half,” Head Football Coach Thomas Caporale said.
Caporale attributes their comeback to the many practices and training sessions leading up to the season. The team’s practices started this summer, occurring on an almost daily basis, and consisting of multiple training methods such as running on the track, lifting in the weight room and running hills. These training methods help give the team the edge it needs to win these games.
“We do stuff other teams don’t do,” senior and linebacker Qwuincy Bonnie Anne said. “So I feel like we’re in better shape. It’s about the little stuff.”
When asked about the highlight of the game, players said it was the interception for a touchdown, also known as a 6-pick, that took place in the third down on the 40-yard line.
“I went down the middle and took it to the house,” Quarterback Jamal Haggins said. “My teammate and Defensive Back Kel-el Pascal caught a ‘pick 6’ and we sealed the game right there.”
Their next game is Thursday Aug. 31 against Southridge High School at the Southridge football field at 7:30 p.m.
“The players that we have right now are fully in,” Pascal said. “We’re looking forward to the state championships because that’s the goal and that’s where we’re headed.”
