On Mar. 14, Mu Alpha Theta held their annual Pi Day celebration. Created in 1988 by Larry Shaw, Pi Day is a celebration of the mathematical coefficient “pi,” commonly known by the numbers 3.14 (hence the date of March 14).
The club celebrates the day by letting students throw shaving cream pies at the faces of teachers and volunteer students for a cost of $2. The money goes towards Mu Alpha Theta, providing funds for math rallies and future state competitions. Both teachers and students such as seniors Gabriel Shlain and Nataly Wittels along with AP English Literature teacher Michael Kelly and coach Caron Schiffman were happy to participate in the event in order to raise money for a good cause.
Senior and Mu Alpha Theta member Shaihan Brown was one of those volunteers. “I didn’t want to get pied at first, but when my friends wanted to pay to pie me, I knew it would be good for Mu Alpha Theta,” Brown said.
In addition to the pie throwing, there was a scavenger hunt that required math knowledge in order to figure out the clues and a pi digit recital contest, with the winners receiving extra credit in their math class.
“It was a fun environment because everyone put forth effort to raise money for a club they loved,” Brown said.
