In March, the sports world turns to college basketball for its annual March Madness tournament. While most people were watching the games, former Krop student, Angel Rodriguez was one of the tournament’s stars.
Over the course of the season, Rodriguez and teammate Sheldon Mcclellan lead the University of Miami to a 27-8 record and the ranking of the #10 overall team in the country by the Associated Press. Rodriguez averaged 12.8 points, 4.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game, but it was not until the tournament that the country saw what Rodriguez was made of.
In Rodriguez’s first tournament game against the University of Buffalo, he put up 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. He then followed that performance with a 28 point showing against Wichita State, which sent University of Miami to the prestigious sweet sixteen round.
In the sweet sixteen, Rodriguez lost to Villanova, the eventual National Champions, but while his career at Miami is over, the loss does not mark the end of basketball for him.
Rodriguez is currently viewed as a fringe NBA player that may sneak into the second round of the draft. He was invited to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, a showcase for seniors that will have scouts from every team in the NBA. Rodriguez will try to improve his draft stock by performing well in the tournament.
If Rodriguez does not get drafted, he will likely be signed to an NBA summer league team that will afford him the opportunity to make an NBA roster. However, if he fails to make it to the NBA fans can expect a successful career overseas.
