Artists are creative people who all share one big idea, being imaginative. We should separate artists from their music because if we stop listening to canceled artists there will be no one to listen to. Canceling a controversial artist over anything just leads to more problems and less music to listen to.
According to Healthline, music has an impact on people’s emotions and mental health. Listening to music can increase mood and positivity, while soothing music can help calm and reduce anxiety. Music can be provided as a form of therapy, offering comfort during challenging times. Music is a powerful tool for improving overall health because of its ability to emotionally connect with individuals. If we stop listening to every canceled artist then we would have no one to listen to. Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Lil Uzi Vert, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Lil Wayne and Young Thug have all been considered canceled for different reasons, but that list alone contains some of the most popular artists today.
Kanye West, a popular artist, has been under heat in recent years for his comments and actions. It’s important to remember that he has displayed symptoms of bipolar disorder, such as despite never having sided with or supported Nazi thinking in the past, having a sudden change of opinion about Jews. His early music displayed a hatred for Nazis, regardless of his questionable current opinions. It’s normal to feel uncomfortable about backing away from an artist whose behavior you find unacceptable, but it’s also necessary to consider the possibility of missing out on the chance to listen to the music you love.
The debate around whether we should continue to listen to music from controversial artists or we should stop is a prevalent problem in the music community. By completely restricting fans from listening to their favorite artist, they risk the enjoyment and comfort that that fan may have found when listening to that artist. Ultimately everyone has a mind of their own and can choose who they listen to.
