What is something that makes you feel better about yourself? This is a question you might be asked to consider during one of the weekly activities the Happiness and Wellbeing Club hosts on Wednesdays.
The club’s purpose of promoting Wellness Wednesday is to combat burnout and promote self-care. The Wellness Wednesday activities include writing for someone you are grateful for or writing a compliment to anyone. These tasks have helped students think of others and engage with some students at the table.
“The activities help students who struggle with mental health issues feel less alone, ” junior Madison Simons said.“We are the future of the world so our wellness and mental health matters.”
Club members are having some difficulty with student participation; however. In order to combat this issue, members try to spread word of mouth to Krop students by promoting it, talking about it, or persuading people to try and join the club.
“Wellness Wednesday is essential,” Vice President, junior Allison Rojas said. “It is good for students to feel more included in activities, make them feel like they are a part of something, to engage with our very welcoming club members that host these tables provides a sense of comfort which is essential for student wellness.”
Club sponsor, Psychology teacher Arturo Tenacio believes that Wellness Wednesdays can promote mental health awareness in several ways.
“It can help people improve their coping mechanisms, understand positive emotions, and it provides them with strategies to deal with sadness, as well as providing positive experiences to make students feel better,” Tenacio said. “It is nice to see students and my club members participate in the activities that help make the school a more positive place.”
Next Wednesday, during lunch, stop near the gym and see what new activity the Happiness and Well-Being club has in store for us today.
