With the increase of school shootings, on Sept. 5 a national walkout took place protesting against gun violence and demand for a change. Krop participated with the help of administration and students.
The Students Demand Action Organization planned a national walkout asking for students to take action. The information was then posted on an instagram page, @voteinorout, to spread awareness. Activities Director Michell Russell and senior Denzel Augustin, along with seniors Nancy Bahar and Spencer Kabak, coordinated the walkout to happen so that students would participate without having to worry about the consequences of facing administration.
“There were people that I knew that really cared about this issue, it’s a really touchy-feely topic,” senior Denzel Augustin said. “It’s the fact that this is still happening and all of us wanted to make sure our voices were heard so I decided to take the lead.”
At 12:10 students met in front of the gymnasium and made their way to the track, where they were given 15 minutes to participate in the walk. Students were able to bring posters and Augustin gave a speech before the walkout, recognizing the schools that have been affected and lives lost due to school shootings.
“I feel like it’s important for all of us to try to show support. The more people that go, the more attention it brings in,” senior Nathaniel Ford said. “It’s a serious topic, it doesn’t just happen at one school and it happens more often.”
